We're hiring

We’re looking for a full-time data journalist to join our studio and help us create stunning data visualizations and digital projects.

The role

This role is special. And so are you. Most people see themselves as either a data person or a words person. You’re both. You love discovering stories in data. You’re a writer but you know data too, as comfortable in a spreadsheet as you are writing headlines. You’re not a designer, but you’ve plotted data and created charts. You have a creative mind that’s excited by data visualization and storytelling. You’re inquisitive about the world in general.

As one of our data journalists, you’ll be working within the editorial team. But you’ll be collaborating with and learning from everyone here – our designers, developers and researchers – to help us deliver brilliant projects for our clients.

You could be writing sharp tweets or short articles. You could be researching data stories on a subject like gender inequality or COVID-19. You could be cleaning datasets for others to analyse. You could be helping to sketch out ideas for visualizations and brainstorming creative concepts. You could be writing a longform narrative or penning a headline that explains a chart.

You don’t need to be the finished product – this may be your first job or your second – but you do need to have talent, skills and a powerful passion to learn. We’ll help you grow.

The right candidate will:

  • Using technology – definitely spreadsheets, maybe also R or Python – to analyse and explore data
  • Writing – from social media to chart annotations to longer-form stories
  • Researching both simple and complex subjects across any domain (from environment, health and science to sport, culture and gender)
  • Working in a creative team
